The cost of power has been on an upward spiral in India. It is struggling to meet its power demand, so much so, that currently India imports more than 32% of its power needs. The impact is obvious, an increase in power tariffs. But has anyone observed by how much the tariffs have increased over the years.
Here is a comparison from 2012 to 2020 power tariffs and the % increase.
For comparison purposes the maximum tariff for units of electricity consumed for a state is taken from 2012 compared with the maximum tariff of 2020. Please note besides the unit cost, there are other charges one can find in the bill namely (i) Electricity Duty (ii) Fuel Surcharge (iii) Power Purchase adjustment cost (iv) surcharge etc. which is not included in the comparison.
The maximum increase in tariff was noted for Mumbai Tata, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand whereas the least increase was noted for Kerala, Gujarat and Odisha respectively.
Note: The date is collected using websites of all electricity regulatory commissions which is updated regularly by the regulatory commission.
